How To Grow The Beard You Want

Read time: 7 minutes

Every beard is different, and every man’s journey when growing his first or dream beard is different. To help you grow successfully, we have put together our top 10 tips on how to grow the beard you want.

Tip One - Determine your face shape.

If starting out, or you gave up last time because you felt you looked stupid. What you want to do first is find what face shape you have and see what beards suite you. To help, we recommend checking out www.fashionbeans.com.

Tip Two - Decide what beard you want to try and grow.

Again spend some time on Google, ask your partner or a friend for their opinions and remember to have at least two or three options you like.

Tip Three - Patience

It won’t take one or two days to grow the perfect beard, it’s going to take a lot longer. Some guys spend years on growing there’s. This is where knowing what kind of beard suites you and knowing what kind of beard you want helps. Knowing this can also help you get through the wait and keep you motivated.

Remember though everyone is different and has different genetics, so don't get disheartened if a friend outgrows you or all you start to see is guys with better beards. Your time will come.

Tip Four - Keeps it clean!

What ever you decide to grow, keep your beard hair clean and the skin underneath it by washing it at least once a week. You do not need to wash it too regularly as doing so can actually damage the hair and remove vital oils from both the beard hair and skin, leaving the hair weak and the skin prone to dryness.

If you're just starting out washing every 2-3 days is a good starting point for beards less than 1-2 inches long and once over 2 inches long move to washing once a week.

Note: If you're looking for a great beard wash, we recommend our own ‘Cowell Organic Beard Wash."

Tip Five - Don’t get put off.

Don’t get put off if you have a patchy beard, grey or different coloured hairs. Like most ladies say there is nothing wrong with a bit of colour or salt and pepper as it shows character. To grow a successful beard the first time, just let it grow and see what happens. Then, if you do end up with grey hairs, patches or different colours such as ginger you can decide what to do with it and tailor it to suit your face and what you're wanting.

Tip Six - Let it grow.

Just let it grow. If at the start, your beard is uneven let it grow, your beard will look more even the longer it gets. If you do get short, uneven parts of your beard make sure to trim it regularly and style it accordingly once it's long enough and shape it to look even and suit your face.

If you do find you have patches with less hair try grow the beard hair around it to hide them. Otherwise, seek advice and just let it grow. Patches should disappear over time if you look after your beard correctly and keep it healthy.

Tip Seven - Keep yourself, your skin and your beard healthy.

Regular exercise, good hydration and nutrition will go a long way. If you do keep yourself fit and healthy, the bonus will be once your beard is in shape and how you want it you will be feeling awesome and looking great all at the same time.

Tip Eight - Use beard products every day!

Products like beard oil, beard butter, beard balm or beard wax are designed for supporting both beard growth and health, and skin health. They also provide protection from everyday work and activities.

Extra tip: Always check out the ingredients of any beard product to make sure you know what its benefits are and avoid any reactions. Different products offer different benefits. If you do get a reaction you may need to shave off the beard and we don't want that.

Some ingredients we use are:

Sweet almond oil

Sweet almond oil will soften and strengthen your beard and also contains B-7 (Biotin) and helps protect your beard from the sun.

Vitamin E oil

Vitamin E oil is amazing for beards as it stops beard itch, beard dandruff and helps keep your skin healthy.

To help we have listed all ingredients on our product pages, check out our range of Cowells products right here.

Tip Nine - Beard supplements.

If you really get stuck you can always try supplements to support and promote a healthy beard and growth, our picks are as follows.

Collagen Peptides

This supplement is perfect for hair, skin, nails and also your joints. Described by our friends at the Vitamin Grocer collagen is:

‘A major structural protein in the human body (found in skin, joints, bones, blood vessels and connective tissues). As we age, collagen naturally breaks down and diminishes over time, leading to the early signs of aging.’

So in a nutshell collagen peptides keep up your collagen levels and peptides are amino acids the building blocks for skin.

Tip Ten - Enjoy the ride.

When it comes to growing a beard enjoy the ride. Growing a beard can be a lot of fun and it also can have many positive benefits that flow in different parts of your life.

For example, you learn patience with beards. You learn to look after yourself and how you look. To have a great healthy beard also requires you to keep yourself healthy, and there are many beard groups to be found online and on social media which can get you talking with and meeting fellow bearded guys and this helps with your mental health.

So overall we recommend growing a beard to anyone and we hope these 10 tips help you in some way on your journey.

Cheers,

Shane C.
