Benefits of jojoba oil for the beard

Read time: 4 minutes

This week we’re talking all things Jojoba oil, its benefits and why every man needs it in his beard.

Jojoba oil is one of the best carrier oils for both skin and beard and is found in most beard products.

A carrier oil is also known as a base oil and is used in beard products to dilute essential oils so they can be applied safely to both the hair and skin.

Without getting too technical lets take a look at what our skin and beard hair is made of so we can understand the benefits of jojoba oil and how it works.

Facial skin

Our skin is made of three layers.

  1. The epidermis
  2. The dermis
  3. The hypodermis

What does each level of skin consist of or do?

  • The epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone.
  • The dermis, beneath the epidermis, contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands.
  • The deeper subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis) is made of fat and connective tissue.

What is beard hair made of?

Firstly, the beard hair that comes from the surface of our facial skin is called the hair shaft, which emerges from individual hair follicles embedded within the layers of our skin.

Our beard hair is made of a complex set of layers called the cuticle, cortex and medulla. Each strand of beard hair sprouts from what we call the bulb situated in the hair follicle.

The main benefits of Jojoba oil and how it works

Besides being great for beard hair jojoba oil is most beneficial for the skin under our beard. Using jojoba oil regularly promotes good skin health which in turn leads to a healthy beard and beard growth.

How does jojoba oil help the skin?

1. It helps soothe the skin from where the beard grows

Jojoba oil has soothing, anti-inflammatory, healing, moisturizing and anti-microbial properties. It can help soothe such things as eczema, psoriasis, and other drying skin conditions. This is perfect for anyone with dry skin or itchy skin that causes in turn what we call the 'beard itch'. It can also help with first time beard growers not used to having a beard.

2. It regulates sebum production in the skin

What is sebum?

Sebum is a waxy, oily substance created by the skin that hydrates both the skin and beard. It also contributes to the waterproofing of the skin and acts as a barrier against harmful materials. If you have oily skin or oily beard, it may sometimes be because your skin produces too much Sebum. However, if there is insufficient sebum produced, your skin may become dry and affect your skin and beard. Consequently affecting your overall beard health and beard growth.

How can jojoba oil help? When you use jojoba oil, it coats and moisturizes both the skin and beard hairs and sends a signal to your hair and sweat follicles that your skin does not require extra sebum for hydration. This first helps to keep your skin and beard from an oily appearance and helps prevent acne caused by blocking pores.

Benefits of jojoba oil for beard hair?

Jojoba oil because of its composition acts as a conditioner for beard hair. Because it acts as a moisturizer it provides protection against beard hair dryness, breakage, split ends and can reduce/ stop beard dandruff.

Jojoba contains C and B vitamins, vitamin E, copper, and zinc. These vitamins and minerals nourish the hair, keeping them strong and wholesome.

Because it strengthens the hair, it is also believed that jojoba oil can prevent hair loss and promote the thickness of the hair. The idea behind this is that the oil moisturizes hair follicles, which prevents dryness that leads to beard hair loss.

Where to find jojoba oil for the beard?

You can find it in most beard oils, beard butters, beard balms and beard waxes. Pretty much nearly all beard products.

That's because it's a popular carrier oil to dilute the essential oils used to perfume a product.

However, if you suffer from sensitive skin, it may sometimes be essential oils in a product or the wrong levels of essential oils being used. If this sounds like you and you suffer from sensitive skin. We recommend using a fragrance-free or fragrant product with natural physical ingredients from things you know not to affect your skin. Either way, do a small test on your skin whenever trying a new product.

You can also find jojoba oil in almost every Cowells beard product because of its impressive benefits. We recommend any of the Cowells natural scented beard products if you suffer from sensitive skin or have dry skin. These products do not contain any essential oils or products that will irritate sensitive or dry skin.

If you don't have sensitive skin check out famous fragrant beard products such as 'Outback' and 'Bondi'. We make sure all of our fragrances are measured correctly and accurately to minimize unwanted side effects. Simply head to www.cowells.com.au if you want to find out more.
